Obituary: the naive ρ-preserving potential
The naive ρ-preserving potential was the term −μ[Tr(K K_ref)]², added to model I so that its circle of vacua would reduce to two and the breaking of Born reciprocity could survive in two dimensions. It is symmetric under ρ and gives the two intended vacua in the frozen-H reduction, where the metric H is held at 1 and K stays on its circle of angles. Once H is allowed to vary it is unbounded below: along a family of boosted configurations the compatibility term stays at zero while the potential falls without limit, and the intended vacuum is a saddle. The worklog’s first pass of criterion S4 and the first version of the toy-model note rested on it. The round-4 referee found the defect, the adjudication upheld it, and the potential survives only as the counterexample that the bounded potential V_b answers.
Status: Dead as a stabilizing potential; kept as the counterexample — untagged in the sources — killed by round-4 findings F1 and F2, both upheld (review round 4); the runaway and the saddle are checked in verify/toy_coset.py (the toy-model scripts). Listed in the graveyard.
What was claimed#
Why model I needed a potential#
Model I’s vacua form a continuous family, and at H = 1 the polarization is an angle φ on a circle (Model I vacua). Criterion S4 asks that the breaking survive quantum fluctuations, and the worklog named the obstacle when it wrote the criterion: “In 1+1, a discrete symmetry can break (as in the 2D Ising model). A continuous compact one cannot (Coleman–Mermin–Wagner)” (‘Success criteria’; the Mermin–Wagner–Coleman theorem). It predicted: “S4 will pass only for a discrete reduction (the symmetry group cut down to the group generated by ρ) or via the non-amenability exception.” (‘Predictions’).
The proposal#
The worklog’s fallback for S4, recorded with the route decision of 2026-10-19 (‘Chunk 1 results’):
Discrete reduction by a τ-type potential −μ[Tr(K K_ref)]². It keeps ρ and leaves two vacua (±K_ref) exchanged by ρ, which is Ising-like, so the breaking survives in 1+1.
The cost: a rigid, unordered pair of axes. That is weaker than a rigid η, but it is still background structure. Checkpoint §10 already posits a cosine potential for τ.
“τ-type” refers to that cosine: checkpoint #11 §10 gives the dark-energy field τ the potential V = V₀[1 + cos(τ/f)] on its circle (τ: hilltop quintessence). K_ref is the fixed reference structure diag(1, −1), whose eigenlines are the x- and p-axes.
At H = 1, on the circle K(φ), the potential is a cosine of twice the angle: “−μ[Tr(K K_ref)]² = −2μ(1 + cos 2φ)” (worklog, ‘Chunk 3 results’; the referee confirmed it with sympy, “(difference 0)”, review/round4/referee/audit-notes.md, Step 2(a)). It is lowest at φ = 0 and φ = π, that is at K = +K_ref and K = −K_ref, and it is unchanged by ρ, which shifts φ by π; the referee also found it “rho-invariant for all K”. The first version of the toy-model note (commit d9a06ac) stated it this way (§4):
The potential −μ[Tr(K K_ref)]² = −2μ(1 + cos 2φ) is invariant under ρ (φ → φ + π). It reduces the U(1) to a discrete group, leaving two vacua K = ±K_ref exchanged by ρ. This is the two-fold anisotropic planar model, whose ordered phase is Ising-like [12].
Its summary listed among the results “Ising-class breaking of ρ in model I in 1+1, once a ρ-preserving potential is added” (v1 §6).
How it was tested#
Only with H frozen at 1. The first version asserted “At H = 1 the polarization field is φ, with XY stiffness (f_K²/2)(∂φ)²” (v1 §4), and the worklog’s S4 test was a lattice simulation of that angle alone: “Reduction: at H = 1 the polarization field is the angle φ of K(φ), and ρ acts as φ → φ + π. The kinetic term is an XY stiffness.” (‘Chunk 3 results’; the frozen-H reduction). The simulation found order at low temperature, and the worklog recorded “S4 passes only with the τ-type potential [V]”. Nothing checked the potential with H free to move; the adjudicator had also checked it only at frozen H (review/round4-adjudication.md, ruling F2).
The reduction also kept K on its circle K(φ). Flag 40 in review/wiki-build-flags.md records what happens when only H is held at 1 and K is free on its hyperboloid: at the couplings the gate uses, λ = μ = 1, the potential is unbounded below and K_ref is a saddle, with the Hessian eigenvalue −6; it is bounded at H = 1 only on the circle K(φ) or for λ ≥ 4μ (review/wiki-build-checks/frozen_h_naive.py).
Why it failed#
F1: unbounded below once H moves#
Finding F1, upheld: “The §4 potential −μ[Tr(K K_ref)]² is unbounded below in model I”. The referee’s construction takes the vacuum (1, K₀), with K₀ = K_ref, and moves it by a boost of the phase plane (review/round4/referee/audit-notes.md, Step 2(a)):
S(t) = [[cosh t, sinh t], [sinh t, cosh t]] (symplectic)
H = S(t)ᵀ S(t), K = S(t)⁻¹ K₀ S(t)Every member of this family is the vacuum carried by a symmetry of model I’s own terms, so it stays compatible: the referee found “lambda-term on family: 0”. The fields are constant, “so no kinetic cost”. The added potential is not invariant under the boost. On the family the referee found K(t) = [[cosh(2t), 2 sinh t cosh t], [−sinh(2t), −cosh(2t)]], whose entries grow without limit while K² = 1 still holds, because K’s target, the de Sitter hyperboloid, is non-compact [T]. With them the potential falls: “V_mu on family: -4mucosh(2*t)**2” (out_model1.txt).
| Boost parameter t | 0 | 0.5 | 1 | 2 | 4 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
V_total/μ, referee (out_model1.txt) | −4.0000 | −9.5244 | −56.6165 | −2982.9583 | −8886112.5205 |
V_μ at μ = 1, adjudicator (arb.out) | −4.0000e+00 | — | −5.6616e+01 | −2.9830e+03 | −8.8861e+06 |
compatibility term, adjudicator (arb.out) | 0.00e+00 | — | 6.38e-30 | 1.18e-24 | 2.66e-14 |
The adjudication’s summary: “along H = SᵀS, K = S⁻¹K₀S (S a boost), the λ-term is ~0 while V_μ = −4, −56.6, −2983, −8.9×10⁶ at t = 0, 1, 2, 4.” Version 2 of the note: “Along H = SᵀS, K = S⁻¹K_ref S with S a boost, the compatibility term stays zero while the potential reaches −8.9 × 10⁶ μ at boost parameter 4.” (§4). The gate repeats the endpoint, “quoted: unbounded below - at boost t = 4 the compatibility term is ~0 and -[Tr(K K_ref)]^2 = -8.9e6”, and prints −8.8861e+06 (verify/toy_coset.py).
Nothing in model I bounds this decrease. Both kinetic terms vanish for constant fields and the compatibility term is zero along the whole family, so the added potential is the only term that changes, and it decreases without bound.
F2: the intended vacuum is a saddle#
Finding F2, upheld: “So (1, K_ref) is a saddle, and the Monte Carlo simulates a frozen-H reduction, not model I”. The Hessian, the matrix of second derivatives of the potential at (1, K_ref) with H free, has a negative eigenvalue: a direction in which the energy goes down. Two independent computations, in different coordinates:
| λ = 1 | λ = 10 | λ = 100 | |
|---|---|---|---|
| referee, coordinates (X, Y, b, c) | −3.3723, 0.0, 2.3723, 4.0 | −2.7797, 0.0, 4.0, 28.7797 | −2.6785, 0.0, 4.0, 298.6785 |
adjudicator, coordinates (x, y, u, t) of verify/toy_coset.py | −6.4721, 0, 2.4721, 8 | −4.3961, −0, 8, 36.3961 | −4.04, −0, 8, 396.04 |
Both rows are Hessians of the compatibility term at coupling λ plus the naive potential at μ = 1; the referee writes the function “V_lambda/8 + V_mu”, the adjudication “λV_λ + V_μ” (referee: out_model1.txt, where the negative eigenvalue at λ = 1 is exactly “-sqrt(33)/2 - 1/2”; adjudicator: review/round4/adjudicator/arb.out). Version 2 quotes “Hessian eigenvalue −6.47 at λ = μ = 1”, and the gate prints [−6.472, 0, 2.472, 8] and passes “the unnormalized potential makes (1, K_ref) a saddle (negative Hessian eigenvalue)”. The eigenvalues depend on the coordinates; the sign carries over between them [T], and the two sets agree that one direction goes down. Raising the compatibility coupling λ a hundredfold does not remove that direction, which fits a decrease of the energy along configurations where the compatibility term is zero, as on the boost family.
The consequence, in the referee’s words: “The ’two vacua K=+-K_ref’ exist only if H is frozen at 1, which the manuscript asserts (‘At H = 1 the polarization field is phi’) but does not justify; H is a dynamical hyperbolic sigma field.” (Step 2(a)), and “The Monte Carlo is of the textbook XY + two-fold-field model with H frozen, not of model I.” (Step 3, point C3).
The residual symmetry#
The referee also worked out, with sympy, which elements of Sp(2, ℝ) the potential leaves invariant: those that carry K_ref to ±K_ref (Step 2(c); review/round4/referee/out_sec4_extra.txt). S⁻¹K_ref S = +K_ref forces S = diag(a, 1/a), and S⁻¹K_ref S = −K_ref forces S = [[0, −1/c], [c, 0]]. “So the potential leaves a non-compact boost subgroup unbroken plus {+-1, +-rho} (Z4) in SO(2)” (Step 2(c); capitals lowered here). The referee’s “boost subgroup” is the stretches diag(a, 1/a) of the x- and p-axes, which this wiki calls squeezes (the symplectic form and Sp(2d, ℝ); on the referee’s two uses of the word boost, see flag 10 in review/wiki-build-flags.md). Among the rotations only ±1 and ±ρ survive, so ρ is kept, as intended.
The runaway boosts S(t) stretch along the diagonals x ± p. For t ≠ 0 they are neither squeezes of the x- and p-axes nor rotations, so the potential is not invariant along them, and that is where it falls. The referee drew the same connection: “Combined with F1/F2: in model I proper, the boost direction is where the potential runs away.”
The ruling#
Round 4 graded the first version of the note B, “flawed but salvageable”, and the adjudicator agreed: “The only claim of actual quantum symmetry breaking (§4, model I in 1+1) rests on a potential that is unbounded below once H is dynamical.” and “It is repairable.” (review/round4-adjudication.md, ‘Verdict’). The referee named it the single weakest link: “Sec. 4’s rho-preserving potential -mu[Tr(K K_ref)]^2. In model I it gives V = -4 mu cosh^2(2t) along the lambda-flat family, so (1, K_ref) is a saddle (Hessian eigenvalue -3.37). The Monte Carlo therefore tests a frozen-H XY model, not model I.” (Step 4).
The pre-registration had pointed at the same place: “Weakest link: in 1+1, the ‘spontaneous’ breaking of ρ rests on an explicit, rigid background. The ρ-preserving potential needs a fixed unordered pair of axes K_ref.” (review/round4-preregistration.md). It was scored “Partial: right location, missed severity”, with the calibration note “Weakest-link location has improved. Severity is still underestimated.” (‘Pre-registration scored’).
What it brought down#
- The worklog’s S4 pass and verdict. “S4 passes only with the τ-type potential [V]”; “Then ρ breaks as a Z₂ (Ising class), with vacua ±K_ref” (‘Chunk 3 results’); and the verdict on acceptance criterion 1: “Met, in the referees’ wording, by the coset toy plus a τ-type potential”, with ρ “spontaneously broken (Ising class in 1+1, Monte Carlo verified)” (‘Assessment against the predictions’). Version 2 and #11 restate the result with the bounded potential, for the frozen-H reduction only.
- The first version’s claim of Ising-class breaking in model I. It was narrowed in two ways; see the frozen-H reduction.
The lattice numbers did not fall with it. At H = 1 the naive form and V_b differ only in their overall factor, and the simulated energy −h cos 2φ matches either up to a constant and a factor. verify/toy_s4.py says so in its docstring, “the energy here is the frozen-H form, -h cos(2 phi), which equals the bounded V_b at H = 1 up to a constant and a factor (both depend on phi only through cos 2 phi)”, while its opening lines still call the naive form “The tau-type potential”. That is a wording lag; no number conflicts (Monte Carlo: an ordered ℤ₂ phase).
What survives#
- The repair. The referee proposed a normalized form, version 2 adopted it, and it is bounded and stable with H dynamical: the bounded potential V_b. At H = 1 it keeps the naive form’s shape, −(μ/2)(1 + cos 2φ) against −2μ(1 + cos 2φ).
- The simulation, restated. The ordered ℤ₂ phase stands as a result about the frozen-H reduction, not about model I with H dynamical.
- A requirement in #11. Checkpoint #11 §10 now says of the ρ-preserving potential: “That potential must be bounded with all fields dynamical — the round-4 review found the naive form unbounded once H moves”.
- A rule. The root
CLAUDE.md, Method: “When numerics run on a reduced model (fields frozen), check the unreduced model’s stability — boundedness, and the Hessian with all fields dynamical — and say in the text that it is a reduction. Round 4 found a potential that was bounded only at frozen H.” (the reduced-model stability rule; round-4 lesson 1). The last sentence holds for the frozen-H reduction, in which K also stays on its circle, and not if only H is held fixed; flag 40 inreview/wiki-build-flags.mdrecords the point, and its audit rated it as depending on that reading.
Where any ρ-preserving potential comes from is open. The naive form is listed in the graveyard.
