Born's answer: momentum space gravitates
Born’s answer is the program’s summary of what its gravity results say about the question Max Born raised in 1938, which calc note #8 states as “what is the dynamics of momentum-space geometry?” (Born’s question). In general relativity the space of momenta at each point is flat. The program’s answer is that momentum-space geometry is dynamical: it is carried by X = Re Z, a massive spin-2 field that changes sign under reciprocity, with two free parameters and no vacuum energy from its interaction potential. Conjugate matter couples to X through the dual stress, while ordinary matter feels it only at gravitational strength and over a short range, which the program gives as the reason no second metric has been observed. The answer assembles derived results and stands as a structural statement: checkpoint #11 §15 holds back the word “theory” until open problems 1–3 are settled, and the founding supposition that momentum space has its own gravity is recorded as “vindicated, transformed”.
Status: Alive — a summary with no tag of its own; it assembles results tagged [D + T], [D — structural], [D] and [D][V], listed clause by clause below. Calc note #8 §5 calls the open residue “none of it existential”, and #11 §15 makes “theory” wait on §14 items 1–3.
The question it answers#
Quantum kinematics treats position and momentum alike, and general relativity does not: it curves the space of positions and leaves the momenta available at each point flat. #11 §3 counts “general relativity’s flat momentum fibers” among the sources of the asymmetry and calls them “an architectural assumption, not a measurement” (Born’s question; curved momentum space).
The program inherited the question as the first of its open problems. The lab notebook’s list, “in order of severity”, begins: “The field equation for H beyond minisuperspace — Born’s 88-year debt. The action exists (Born connection [T]), but solutions, the section condition on curved backgrounds, and the full ghost analysis do not. [O]” (#1 §11; the lab notebook). It became Debt 1 (the three debts).
Calc note #5 then located the question inside the modular field Z = X + iY, whose imaginary part is the spacetime metric and whose real part is a new symmetric tensor: “Born’s debt, restated exactly: the field equation for momentum-space geometry is the Re Z sector of S_H.” (§C, [D — structural; math facts standard]). Calc note #8 §4 states the question as “the 88-year question ‘what is the dynamics of momentum-space geometry?’”.
The answer as stated#
#11 §7, closing the section on the momentum graviton:
“Born’s answer, as this program states it: momentum-space geometry is dynamical — a reciprocity-odd massive spin-2, its mass born of the polarization choice, its dynamics the reciprocity-symmetric branch of bimetric gravity with the second frame confined to compact Λ(4), its wedge vacuum energy zero by identity. Momentum space gravitates, massively and invisibly to everything not polarized its way — which is simultaneously why the symmetry is real and why its second metric was never seen.”
Calc note #8 §4 (see The Debt-1 calc notes) has the fuller form, written when the answer was first assembled:
“Momentum-space geometry is carried by X = Re Z, the reciprocity-odd partner of the metric. It is a massive spin-2 field — massless is forbidden by the multi-graviton no-go, and the mass is generated by the Higgsing of dual diffeomorphisms when the vacuum selects a polarization. Its self-consistent dynamics is Hassan–Rosen bimetric gravity restricted to the reciprocity-symmetric branch with the second frame confined to the compact moduli space Λ(d): two free parameters, vacuum energy exactly zero by the palindrome theorem, coupled to conjugate matter through the dual stress (the gate) and to ordinary matter only at gravitational strength and short range.”
The answer, clause by clause#
Each clause is a result with its own page and its own tag. The answer is as strong as the weakest of them.
| Clause | What it says | Where it is derived | Tag |
|---|---|---|---|
| “momentum-space geometry is dynamical” | It is carried by X = Re Z, “the fluctuation of the emergent polarization” (#11 §6) | The modular field Z = X + iY | [D] (#11 §6) |
| “massive spin-2” | Shift symmetry, dual diffeomorphisms, the multi-graviton no-go and the signature obstruction leave mass as the only exit | Why X must be massive | [D + T] (#11 §7.1) |
| “its mass born of the polarization choice” | The choice of polarization breaks the dual diffeomorphisms and X absorbs their Goldstone modes | The gravitational Higgs mechanism | [D — structural] (#6 §3) |
| “reciprocity-odd” | Of the two spin-2 combinations, X is the one that changes sign under reciprocity; the ordinary graviton is the even, massless one (on the graviton’s parity under #11 §6’s Z → −Z⁻¹, see flag 39 in review/wiki-build-flags.md) | Spectrum, parameters and reciprocity parity | [D] (#11 §7.5) |
| “the reciprocity-symmetric branch of bimetric gravity” | Reciprocity exchanges the two frames of the Hassan–Rosen potential and forces βₙ = β₄₋ₙ | The palindrome βₙ = β₄₋ₙ | [D] (#8 §1); #11 §7.3 heads the section [D][V], the [V] belonging to the identity |
| “the second frame confined to compact Λ(4)” | The ghost-free frame-tier potential couples the metric’s frame to the polarization frame E₀[J], which carries only the compact moduli of Λ(d) | Constrained bimetric gravity; the tuning test | [D — structural] (#7 §4); the tuning test [D][V] (#11 §7.2) |
| “its wedge vacuum energy zero by identity” | Under the palindrome V(1) = 2T, so a flat aligned vacuum forces T = 0 and V(1) = 0 | The vacuum-energy identity V(1) = 2T | [D][V] (#11 §7.3; battery test T5) |
| “two free parameters” (#8 §4) | Five βₙ reduce to two: the combination that sets M_X and one cubic shape | Spectrum, parameters and reciprocity parity | [D] (#11 §7.5); [D + T] (#8 §3) |
| “coupled to conjugate matter through the dual stress (the gate)” (#8 §4) | X exchange between dual-stress bilinears produces the velocity gate | The gate mechanism | [D — structural] (#5 §E); [D — mechanism; shape [O]] (#11 §8) |
| “invisibly to everything not polarized its way” | Ordinary matter feels X at gravitational strength, but only within the range 1/M_X | Safety by range | [D + T] (#8 §3); [D] (#11 §7.5) |
The machine checks behind these results are those of the verification battery, among them the parametrization of the modular field (T2), the algebra of the tuning test (T3, T4, T7) and the identity V(1) = 2T (T5, which prints T5 V(1) - 2T = [0,0,0] [V1=[2, 8, 6] T=[1, 4, 3]]). The palindrome derivation, the parameter count, the parities and the safety argument are derivations without a test.
The closing clause, “which is simultaneously why the symmetry is real and why its second metric was never seen”, is interpretation. The preceding clauses explain how a second metric could exist and go unobserved; no document derives the further claim that they show why the symmetry is real.
How the answer was reached#
The answer is the end of the four Debt-1 calc notes, written in sequence:
- Calc note #5 proved the compatibility theorem, found that freezing both ω and η leaves no independent momentum-space geometry, repaired the postulates to P2′, and identified Re Z = X as “the momentum graviton” (§A–§C).
- Calc note #6 classified X: shift-symmetric and so never auxiliary, a second graviton under dual diffeomorphisms, excluded as massless by the multi-graviton no-go, and made massive by the polarization choice. Its verdict: “massive spin-2, conditionally healthy” (§5).
- Calc note #7 ran the tuning test: potentials built from the metric fail the Fierz–Pauli test, and frame-tier potentials pass. The result is “Hassan–Rosen bimetric gravity with the second frame constrained to a compact moduli space Λ(d)” (§4).
- Calc note #8 applied reciprocity to that potential: the palindrome, the identity V(1) = 2T, the reduction to two parameters, the parities, and its §4, “Debt 1: the answer to Born”.
Calc note #7 §5, written before the fourth note, described its three structural tests (the multi-graviton no-go, the signature obstruction and the tuning test) as “Repeated forced convergence onto consistency islands”. #11 §15 counts four consecutive tests and lists “forced convergence onto consistency islands” among the program’s “Progressive signs” (Assessment).
What the answer leaves open#
- The field equation itself. #5 stated “Born’s debt” as “the field equation for momentum-space geometry is the Re Z sector of S_H”. The answer supplies a class of dynamics rather than that field equation: the wedge sector’s class “was selected by minimality + consistency, not derived line-by-line” (#8 §5, item (i)). Deriving it from S_H is #11 §14 item 1 [O] (deriving the wedge sector from S_H).
- Signature. The chain is worked out for positive-definite metrics only, the “Euclidean-rigorous skeleton” of #6 §3, whose mass step is tagged [D — structural]; the extension to spacetime signature is #11 §14 item 3 [O] (Open: Lorentzian dressing).
- The vacuum-energy clause. Its scope is the spin-2 interaction potential at the aligned point; it “does not by itself address matter-loop vacuum energy” (#11 §7.3). Its novelty is downgraded to “requires detailed comparison with the PM and exchange-symmetric literature” (#11 §7.4; PM is partially massless), which is #11 §14 item 2 [O] (the partially-massless comparison).
- Other open items. The τ–Stückelberg mixing (OP6), the dual-stress enhancement (OP5) and the cosmological stability of a heavy X at equal Planck masses (an open item outside #11 §14). No document gives a value for M_X.
Calc note #8 §5 lists the residue as “(i) first-principles reduction of the symplectic-vielbein wedge sector from S_H …; (ii) Lorentzian dressing of the Euclidean skeleton; (iii) τ–Stückelberg mixing matrix; (iv) dual-stress enhancement parametrics …; (v) literature check on the Λ = 0 palindrome observation”, which are #11 §14 items 1, 3, 6, 5 and 2. #11 §15: “the word ’theory’ still waits on items 1–3 above.”
Superseded: earlier forms of the answer#
The answer and its standing were stated more strongly before #11, in three respects.
- The vacuum energy. The lab notebook’s v0.6 addendum, headed “Debt 1 closed”, had “its vacuum energy zero by theorem”, and #8 §4 “vacuum energy exactly zero by the palindrome theorem”. The v1 paper (#9 §5) dropped the clause from its statement of the answer, while its assessment counted “the palindrome theorem cancelling the symmetric-bimetric vacuum energy” among “two results that stand on their own regardless of its fate” (§11). #11 writes “its wedge vacuum energy zero by identity”, in line with the scope it states in §7.3 and the novelty downgrade of §7.4, and its §15 counts “one identity awaiting a novelty verdict”.
- Whether Debt 1 is closed. The v0.6 addendum says “Debt 1 closed”, and the v1 paper heads its section “(Debt 1: paid)”. Calc note #8 itself says “Debt 1: structurally paid”, and the handoff records it as “closes Debt 1 (structural)” (
HANDOFF.md§3). #11 heads §7 “(Debt 1)” and keeps the open items above. - When “theory” becomes the word. Calc note #6 §5: “Pass ⇒ the geometric core stands and ’theory’ becomes the defensible word.” The v1 paper: “The word ’theory’ awaits items 1–2 of §10” (§11). #11 §15: it “still waits on items 1–3”. The wiki follows #11 (conflicts between sources).
The founding supposition and the popular account#
The tenth of the founding suppositions audited in #11 Appendix A, P.R.’s original intuitions, reads: “Momentum space has its own gravity — vindicated, transformed: dynamical, massive, reciprocity-odd (§7).” (Founding suppositions and their fates.)
The popular article #12 tells the same story in its section “The second geometry, and why it has never been seen”: “A massive field mediates only short-range effects, so the second geometry is invisible to every experiment performed to date — while the familiar graviton remains exactly massless, in agreement with gravitational-wave observations.” #12 presents the framework as if confirmed and is not a source for its status (the popular articles). The masslessness of the ordinary graviton is tested by Row 6: the exactly massless graviton.
