Obituary: the magnetic identification (popsci-only)

The magnetic identification is a claim made only in the popular article “The Universe’s Other Half” (#12): that the program’s momentum-polarized sector is the magnetic side of electromagnetism, dark because Dirac’s condition makes its coupling strong, “about 34, against our 1/137”, with only topological knots surviving from it as free relics; those knots are the retired soliton candidate. No paper or note of the program makes this claim. The technical record supports only the observation that choosing electric charges and choosing position are the same matrix operation, together with an open conjecture that they are one structure. The claim conflicts with a dead claim, with the strict separation of the two sectors’ forces and with the program’s prediction of a permanent null in direct detection, so the wiki records it as dead.

Status: Dead (popsci-only) — no tag; #12 carries none and is never a source for a claim’s status. The claim conflicts with the dead “α_d ≈ 34 via Dirac quantization against our photon” (HANDOFF.md §2; Obituary: the coupling α_d ≈ 34), with P4 taken strictly (#11 §4; round-3 Decision 1) and with prediction row 7 (#11 §13). No review round or program document addresses it directly; the verdict is this wiki’s reading of those conflicts under the source precedence. Home section: electric–magnetic duality; listed in the graveyard and with the popsci-only claims.

What was claimed#

The popular article #12 opens with a caution: “What follows presents the broken-Born framework as if it were confirmed. It is not.” Its section ‘Dark matter as the other polarization’ then makes three statements that go beyond the technical record.

The identification. After explaining that choosing which particles count as electric is “mathematically the same operation as deciding which variables count as position”, #12 continues:

The framework’s proposal is that the two divisions are one. The momentum-polarized sector is the magnetic side of electromagnetism, and its darkness has a quantifiable origin: a consistency condition derived by Dirac in 1931 fixes the product of the two kinds of charge, so the weakness of our electric coupling forces the magnetic coupling to be enormous — about 34, against our 1/137. Magnetic matter is therefore heavy, tightly bound, and solitonic: the natural population of knots.

The free spectrum. “The framework’s addition is the free spectrum: the momentum polarization carries the entire magnetic mirror-family — a matter sector as structured as our own, every member heavy and strongly bound by Dirac’s condition, of which only the topologically protected knots survive the age of the universe as free relics.”

The summary. #12’s closing list (‘What one assumption purchases’) includes “A candidate identity for dark matter’s charge: the magnetic half of electromagnetism’s own duality, with the choice of electric and the choice of position as a single operation performed twice.”

The handoff, written when the checkpoint stood at v2.0, already lists the article as “final (destination article)”, with contents that include the “magnetic identification” (HANDOFF.md §3). The article therefore predates v2.1, which made P4 strict and retired the soliton candidate.

What the record says instead#

#12’s paragraph joins three things that the technical record keeps apart.

  • The same-matrix identity. #11 §11.3 observes that choosing a duality frame is choosing a Lagrangian polarization of charge space, generated by the same matrix as Born’s ρ, tagged [D — structural; math T], and conjectures [O] that the two polarizations are components of one enlarged structure (the symplectic charge lattice; open problem 8). #12’s “The framework’s proposal is that the two divisions are one” states the conjecture without its [O], and its “The momentum-polarized sector is the magnetic side of electromagnetism” has no counterpart in #11.
  • The 34 of our own electromagnetism. “Dirac’s condition e·g ~ 2π pins the magnetic coupling near 4π/e² ≈ 34 — the magnetic world is our strong-coupling mirror, heavy and bound” (#11 §11.2 [T]). That figure describes hypothetical monopoles of our U(1), not a property of the momentum sector (the magnetic mirror-family, where the expression 4π/e² is discussed; the formula is flagged, see flag 28 in review/wiki-build-flags.md).
  • “Magnetic” in the soliton candidate. The candidate #12 favors was built from monopoles of a separate hidden gauge sector. Its manuscript’s v2 defined the word differently from #12: ““Magnetic” refers throughout to the sector’s duality-frame character - solitonic, strongly coupled - not to a charge visible to our electromagnetism” (#14 v2 §2, verbatim in review/skeptic-review-console.html).

How it was tested#

Not by calculation. No review round saw #12’s identification, and no document rules on it. The wiki’s taxonomy records it as popsci-only and treats it as dead because each element of the claim contradicts a statement that ranks above #12 in the source precedence: the root CLAUDE.md, #11, the adjudications and the handoff all outrank the popular articles, and the wiki never takes a claim’s status from #12 (conflicts between sources).

Why it fails#

It repeats a dead claim#

Making the momentum sector the magnetic side of our electromagnetism, with a coupling fixed by Dirac’s condition against our charge, is the first form of the soliton candidate’s coupling, which the handoff lists among the dead claims (HANDOFF.md §2, under “Dead”):

α_d ≈ 34 via Dirac quantization against our photon (round-1 reviewer’s valid kill: can’t use our DSZ lattice and then deny coupling to our photon).

DSZ is the Dirac–Schwinger–Zwanziger pairing of electric and magnetic charges (Dirac quantization and the DSZ pairing). Dirac’s condition relates charges that couple to the same gauge field. Using our electric charge to fix the sector’s magnetic coupling makes its particles magnetic charges of our photon, which contradicts their being dark (Obituary: the coupling α_d ≈ 34).

It contradicts sector separation#

  • The handoff described the candidate as “dark by sector separation,” and stated that it is not magnetically charged under our photon (HANDOFF.md §2; the handoff sets “not” in capitals).
  • #14 v3: “These objects carry no charge under our photon. The Dirac quantization used above is the hidden sector’s own, applied to its own charges; nothing is quantized against our gauge field.” (#14 §2). Its abstract: “dark by sector separation”.
  • P4: “gauge forces do not cross polarizations”, taken strictly since v2.1: “no kinetic mixing between the sectors beyond what gravity induces, which vanishes if hidden charge conjugation is exact and otherwise first appears at six loops, ε ≲ 10⁻¹³ [27S]” (#11 §4; P4: polarized matter and strict sector separation). Round-3 Decision 1 adopted the strict reading (round-3 decisions; kinetic mixing between sectors).

A sector that is “the magnetic side of electromagnetism” carries charge under our photon, which every one of these statements excludes.

It contradicts row 7#

Prediction row 7 of #11 §13 requires a “Permanent null (both dark-sector candidates SM-decoupled; P4 strict)” in direct detection and colliders, and is killed by “Any confirmed non-gravitational DM–SM coupling”, where SM is the Standard Model and DM dark matter (row 7). Dark matter carrying magnetic charge under our photon would have exactly such a coupling.

Its number belongs elsewhere#

“About 34, against our 1/137” is the magnetic coupling of our own electromagnetism, quoted by #11 §11.2 for monopoles of our U(1). The figure is “convention-dependent by a factor of 4”: “1/(4α) = 34.26 (eg = 2πn) vs 1/α = 137.04 (eg = 4πn)” (review/v3-worklog.md, round-2 item R2, [V]). It is a different quantity from the dead hidden-sector α_d ≈ 34, although both come from the same arithmetic (the magnetic mirror-family).

Its knots are retired#

“The natural population of knots” and the “topologically protected knots” that “survive the age of the universe as free relics” are the soliton candidate, which #12 presents as live. It was retired on 2026-10-19 after round 3 found its abundance misnormalized (#11 §12; round-3 Decision 2; Obituary: superheavy conjugate solitons).

The transparency argument#

#12 follows the identification with an argument that a magnetically charged dark sector would still be invisible: “A magnetically charged cosmos raises an immediate objection — should it not affect light? The answer is a standard piece of optics. Uniform media do not scatter light; they refract it.” The argument assumes the premise this page records as dead, uses the mass of the retired candidate, and is checked by no script. It is described, with its numbers, on the popular articles page and quarantined with the identification.

What survives#

  • The established magnetic mirror-family of our own electromagnetism, with its strong magnetic coupling [T].
  • The alive symplectic charge lattice: choosing electric charges and choosing position as the same matrix operation [D — structural; math T].
  • The open conjecture that the two choices are one structure (open problem 8) [O].
  • Conjugate monopoles as ontology: if the momentum sector has monopoles, they gravitate, and under strict P4 they carry no charge under our photon [D].
