Obituary: conjugate collapse powers our expansion

This page records a dead claim: that the gravitational collapse of the conjugate universe, the momentum-space description of our own, is what drives the accelerating expansion of our universe. It was one of the program’s founding suppositions. Written down with the heuristic translation rule of the early discussion, it required dark energy with equation of state w = −2, a value the data exclude. With the translation rule derived properly, the duality dictionary, collapsing conjugate matter acts on our expansion as ordinary matter does, slowing it rather than accelerating it, so the mechanism disappeared. The claim died twice and stays dead.

Status: Dead, twice — untagged — killed first by data (w = −2 is falsified) and then by the corrected duality dictionary (HANDOFF.md §2; #11 App. A item 9); listed in the graveyard.

What was claimed#

Founding supposition 9 of P.R.’s eleven, as #11’s audit records it: “Their collapse is our acceleration” (#11 App. A item 9). The handoff lists it under “Dead” as “Conjugate collapse powers our expansion” (HANDOFF.md §2). See founding suppositions and their fates.

The picture behind it: the program describes the universe twice, once in position variables and once in momentum variables, the second description being the conjugate universe. The supposition proposed that the conjugate universe’s gravitational collapse is the source of the acceleration of our expansion, which standard cosmology attributes to dark energy; the popular article #10 words it as “the conjugate universe’s gravitational collapse is what powers our accelerating expansion”. No document states the claim in more detail than this; it belongs to the development discussion that preceded the lab notebook.

How it was tested the first time#

Turning the idea into a prediction needs a rule for how energy on the conjugate side acts on our expansion. The development discussion used a heuristic rule, w_eff = −2 − w̃, where w̃ is the equation of state of a fluid in the conjugate frame and w_eff the equation of state with which it acts on us. The lab notebook describes the heuristic as one “which identified densities across frames without the constraint’s volume Jacobian” (#1 §6).

The collapsing content is matter, which cosmology models as dust, w̃ = 0 (the handoff’s “dual dust”). On the heuristic rule it acts on our expansion like a fluid with w = −2 (the wiki’s reading of the step: setting ρ_eff = ρ̃ with ã = 1/a gives w_eff = −2 − w̃, and w̃ = 0 gives −2; the derivation is on the duality dictionary). The handoff’s record: “first version gave w = −2 (falsified)” (HANDOFF.md §2).

An equation of state below −1 is phantom: an energy density that grows as the universe expands (the phantom divide) [T]. A value as low as −2 is far outside what observations of the expansion allow [T]. The documents record the verdict as “falsified” and cite no particular measurement; the popular article #10 says the required dark-energy strength was one “the data ruled out decades ago”.

Why it failed the second time#

Deriving the dictionary with the constraint’s volume Jacobian replaced the heuristic with w_eff = −w̃ (#1 §6; #11 §10, “[D — corrected en route]”). Under the derived rule:

dual dust: w̃ = 0 ⇒ w_eff = 0

Collapsing conjugate matter acts on our expansion as ordinary dust. Dust has positive energy density and no pressure, so in the acceleration equation of Friedmann cosmology it decelerates the expansion [T]. The conjugate side’s collapse therefore cannot be the source of our acceleration: “corrected dictionary removed the mechanism (dual dust ↦ dust)” (HANDOFF.md §2). The lab notebook: “dual matter no longer masquerades as exotic energy (dust maps to dust — the w=−2 pathology is gone because it was an artifact)” (#1 §6), and the notebook announces the correction at its head (#1 §0).

The first death was observational: a definite prediction, w = −2, contradicted by data. The second was mathematical: once the rule was derived correctly, there was no prediction to test.

The verdict#

#11’s audit: “dead twice (w = −2 falsified; corrected dictionary removed the mechanism)” (App. A item 9).

The popular article #10 compresses the record: in ‘The method is the message’ it says that data killed two of the founding ideas, and in ‘The killing fields’ that this idea demanded a dark-energy strength the data had excluded and then lost its mechanism once the translation between the two universes was done correctly. #11 App. A item 9 is the record: the second death came from the corrected dictionary, not from data. The popular articles are never a source for a claim’s status (the popular articles).

What survives#

  • The corrected dictionary, w_eff = −w̃ [D — corrected en route], including its entry “Dual stiff ↦ Λ” (#11 §10), which turns conjugate-side kinetic energy into something that acts like a cosmological constant. In the lab notebook the same entry motivates a different source for dark energy (Open: dual kinetic energy versus τ’s potential).
  • Founding supposition 6, “Conjugate universe shrinks as ours expands”, “promoted to theorem” as the cosmological constraint a·ã = 1 (#11 App. A item 6). The conjugate universe does contract as ours expands; that contraction is not a cause of our acceleration.
  • Founding supposition 7, “Our expansion reverses at their bounce”, “alive, corrected” as the turnaround as the conjugate bounce (#11 App. A item 7).
  • Founding supposition 8, “Synchronized, not causal; Fourier/holography”, “alive (the dictionary)” (#11 App. A item 8): the two descriptions are linked by translation, not by one acting on the other.
  • Dark energy is now the field τ: τ: hilltop quintessence on the Maslov circle.

Where it is filed#

History#

  • Chat era, before #1. The heuristic and the supposition built on it; neither survives in any document except as dead or superseded.
  • Lab notebook, v0.1 (#1 §0, §6). The derived dictionary supersedes the heuristic, and dust maps to dust.
  • HANDOFF.md §2. The claim listed among the dead, with both causes.
  • #11 App. A item 9. The fate “dead twice”.
